Sporting Teams

Ever the true believers that sport and pubs are a dynamic combination, the Golden Barley is incredibly proud to sponsor The Flying Bats Womens Football Club - a soccer club run by women for women, fielding five teams this year.

A little bit about The Flying Bats...

In 2010 the Flying Bats are celebrating the anniversary of a night, 25 years ago, when a colony of bats happened across a group of women brainstorming the perfect name for their new football club. It was the night that the Flying Bats were born and, since then, it has grown to be the largest lesbian football club in the world.

This year, the Bats will field five teams in the North West Sydney Women’s Football Association. The size of NWSWF allows the Bats to accommodate players of all skill levels, from absolute beginner through to a high standard, and an over 35s team. Winter matches are strenuous, playing 80 minutes on a full-sized pitch, and have rules and regulations that must be obeyed but the essence of women’s football – and the Bats – is fun.

While football is what brings the Bats together, it serves as a launching pad for so much more. From social nights to weekends away, participation in Sydney’s GLBT events and many other social pursuits (many of which involve the pub), the Bats is more than just sport – it’s a community.

Many of the Flying Bats live and socialise in the Inner West and the Barley is delighted to be their 2010 pub sponsor!

THE BARLEY ELEVEN

NEW FLASH - 1/3/09 - THE BARLEY 11 WINS 4TH GRAND FINAL IN A ROW!!

And lets not forget our champion cricket team - The Barley Eleven, currently defending their title. Having won three grand finals in three years, The Barley Eleven are feared and respected as much for their cricket prowess, as their ability to push through the deepest, darkest hangovers and find that winning edge. Always a fun day in the sun - beer and BBQ - even as a spectator, it's a great day out.
